Sarah Palin resigns as Governor of Alaska

July 3, 2009

Now that was a bit unexpected! Or am I out of touch? According to CNN, she will not seek election for a gubernatorial term in 2010.

Lt. Governor Sean Parnell will be sworn in on July 26th.

In November, Palin officially pardoned a turkey  but then conducted a television interview as another bird was clearly seen being slaughtered in the background.

The word is that she’s either leaving her position to concentrate on a long shot national political ambition, or she simply can’t handle the job she has now that her popularity has dimmed and oil revenues are down.

“Either way, her decision to abandon her post and the people of Alaska who elected her continues a pattern of bizarre behavior that more than anything else may explain the decision she made today.”

Many people have been enamored by Palin. Many others think she’s the dumbest excuse for a cheerleader to go public.

She stated last month that she needs to focus on her state and her family. Alaska will no longer be her focus.

“As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border.” --Sarah Palin, explaining why Alaska’s proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience, interview with CBS’s Katie Couric, Sept. 24, 2008

Afghanistan War – Strike of the Sword

July 3, 2009

Former President Bush expected the war in Iraq to be short, sweet and to the point.  “Mission Accomplished” he hollered after literally a few days in Iraq.  But the reality is, that mission has yet to be accomplished.

Afghanistan

Thousands of U.S. Marines stormed into the river valley in southern Helmand province this week seeking to break the Taliban’s hold on the key opium-growin region and the the tide of the war on Afghanistan.

But what are they trying to achieve?  Launching such an operation risks destroying support for the United States, among its NATO allies.

“According to a tally by Associated Press, for the first five months of the year, U.S. deaths in Afghanistan were up 66 percent compared to the same period in 2008 – but enemy deaths were up 90 percent, and insurgents were killed at a rate about 25 times that of coalition troops.”

4th of July Fireworks in Idaho Falls

July 2, 2009

Love him or hate him, the Frank Vandersloot-funded “Freedom Celebration” ranks high by any standards. This article ranks Idaho Falls #17, right after Disney World’s “Celebrate America.” Another reviewer ranks Idaho Falls #2, right behind Philadelphia.

Speaking of 4th of July festivities in Idaho Falls, the Post Register reported today that the Chamber of Commerce says the 4th of July celebration is a huge boon to our local economy, drawing around 100,000 people to our fair city.

And, finally, what do you think about the Idaho Falls police department cracking down on people staking out the best spot on the greenbelt to watch the fireworks? According to this News Channel 8 report, the City has placed signs throughout Civitan park to warn folks that their blankets and stakes will be removed and disposed of if they stake out spots there prior to July 4th.

Hot Weather can spell disaster for your pets

June 30, 2009

Today, right about lunch time (2ish?), I noticed a young gal take her small dog out of her car at an local restaurant. She walked the dog around and let it potty and then put the dog back in the car and headed for the restaurant with another gal. According to the thermostat in my car, it was 87 degrees outside. Imagine for a moment, how hot that car must have been.

Every year we read about children left in hot cars who die. Most often, this is not done deliberately. It’s due to carelessness. Mom got busy and never meant to do it. She forgot Junior was asleep in the back seat. I sympathize with them because while it’s not something I’ve ever done, I know that we all get scattered brained and do stupid things. Fortunately for most of us, it does not cost another person, much less our own child, their life.

But when it comes to animals, people seem to have a knob in their brain that has an auto shut off valve. They assume that pets can survive anything. They can’t. Extreme temperatures in hot cars, outside without water or shelter, can spell damage if not death, to your pet. The same holds true when it’s very cold. Cats and dogs need fresh (not frozen) water and adequate shelter.

The Fate of Michael Jackson’s Children

June 29, 2009

Okay so you’re all tired of hearing about Michael Jackson. But an important issue still lingers. What happens to the children?

Jackson left behind three children: Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., known as Prince Michael, 12; Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, 11; and Prince Michael II, 7. The youngest son was born to a surrogate mother.

Currently, Michael’s mother Katherine has custody of the children. The mother of the two oldest children, Deborah Rowe fought to reestablish parental rights after Michael was accused of child molestation. By all accounts, Michael was a very loving an attentive father to these children. All were very well behaved and very polite.
However, these children hardly know Deborah Rowe. According to the news, she has played a very small role in their lives, only contacting them periodically. That doesn’t sound to me like she’s very interested.

These children have suffered the trauma of having their father, the caretaker, the one who has raised them from birth, the one who has been in their lives daily, die. The paternal grandmother Katherine, has been a consistence figure in their lives. She is reportedly a loving and attentive grandmother.

First, their lives are turned upside down. Then innocent children may be handed over to a stranger. I think it’s wrong to even consider although I recognize she does have certain rights.   I hope Katherine retains permanent custody of these children.

Some Funnies

June 28, 2009

Things to do if you’re bored:

Sit in your yard pointing a hair dryer at passing cars to see if they slow down.

If you have a glass eye, tap on it with your pen while talking to others.

Sing along at the opera.

Make beeping noises when a large person backs up.

Signal that a conversation is over by clamping your hand over your ears.

Ask people what gender they are.

Tell your friends 4 days prior that you can’t attend their party because you’re not in the mood.

Put a bag of M&M’s on layaway.

What not to say while your wife is in labor:

I’m jealous. Why can’t men experience the joy of child birth?

Are your ankles supposed to look like that?

New Laws for Idahoans

June 28, 2009

According to the Post Register, 338 bills became law this year, well under the 16-year average of 405.

We’ve probably all heard that several services that were provided by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare are facing cuts.

House bill, H123, reduced the budget by $10.3 million for the next fiscal year. This will affect nursing home rates, freezes doctor and dentist reimbursements and intermediate care facility rates.

The House and the Senate overwhelmingly approved midwifery licensing. That’s great news to many new mothers to be.

Penalties will go into affect for governmental bodies violating open meeting laws.

Martial law – Idahoans won’t have to worry about losing their guns.

A new law goes into affect to shield employers from civil liability if they have a policy that allows or doesn’t expressly prohibit employees to store guns in vehicles parked in the parking lot.

Personally, I have never understood why an employer would be liable for that anyway.

Idaho has some seriously outdated laws. The Post Register did not cite many of the laws that are changing. Does anyone know of others?

What are we paying for?

June 27, 2009

No additives nor preservatives – pay just a few dollars more!

Organically grown – pay just a buck or two more!

Let us water down your food/household items! Pay more!

While shopping the other day, I headed for the detergent aisle in need of some Soft Scrub cleanser. For the first time, I paid attention to the diffence in price between Comet cleanser (powdered) and Soft Scrub cleanser (won’t scratch your porceline tub). But the only real difference is that one is watered down for you. Correct?

cat

Canned cat food and dog food is nothing more than dry food that has been watered down. Yet, they get us good on the price tags don’t they?

We pay to eliminate additives and preservatives in our food. Why? Does someone hand pick the additives and preservatives out of our food?

Has anyone figured this out yet?

Self Diagnosis

June 27, 2009

Are you a Cyberchondriac?

Do you use the internet to diagnose medical conditions? Are you a licensed medical provider?

During a recent conversation with a local doctor, he told me how more and more people seem to want to use the internet to diagnose medical issues. He was not happy about the issue. He told me that not only do patients make repeated mistakes and become alarmed without cause, but some are even insistent that they are right and need certain medications to overcome the problem.

Self diagnosis can be dangerous! While I believe its one thing to look up symptoms, we must be cautious that when consulting our licensed medical doctor, that we express our concerns and not insist that we have all the answers. Imagine the danger you can do to yourself and others!

So my question is; are sites such as WebMD useful or harmful? My own take on this is that it doesn’t hurt to look up your symptoms, and if you see something that frightens you, consult your doctor. But I wouldn’t go so far as to insist on a costly battery of tests and drugs that I may or may not need. Worse still, drugs that have the potential to harm myself or my loved ones.
